Sommer: I haven't specifically studied Haaland
Inter Milan will face Manchester City away in the first round of the UEFA Champions League, and goalkeeper Yann Sommer attended the pre-match press conference. Inter drew 1-1 with Monza away in Serie A last weekend, while Manchester City came from behind at home to beat Brentford 2-1, thanks to a brace from Haaland.
Last season, you had a very high save rate, and tomorrow you'll be facing Haaland.
"I can't wait for tomorrow's match. We've prepared very well, and we've put in a lot of effort for games like this. I'm really looking forward to it," Sommer said.
How do you feel about the start of this season?
"So far, I think we haven't shown our best form yet, but that's okay. It's going to be a long season, just like last year. It's normal that some things didn't go as we hoped at the beginning, but we are eager to start this new Champions League campaign."
What is it like to face Haaland?
"He's one of the best forwards in the world, but we're up against a very strong team with an outstanding attacking line. Tomorrow, we must play an excellent game against one of the best teams in Europe."
After winning the Serie A title, it feels like Inter's ambitions in Europe have also grown. Do you feel stronger now?
"For me, it's hard to imagine the 2023 Champions League final since I wasn't at Inter at the time, but winning the Serie A title last season was an amazing experience. Now, a new season has started, and we're not expecting any gifts from our opponents. If we want to have a great Champions League season, we need to put in a lot of effort, dedication, and courage. That’s our goal. We have to keep adding more energy."
As a spectator, what were your impressions of the 2023 Champions League final?
"The final two years ago left a deep impression on me, and I saw many of the same things again last season. Everyone was defending their goal like they were protecting a child—that's the feeling I had. It was impressive, seeing each player give everything for victory. Inter showed that last season, defending the goal with everything they had."
Have you studied Haaland specifically?
"I prepare for every match the same way. Of course, we're talking about a team with very talented players. I've faced Haaland many times, and I know his style of play. Tomorrow, I'll try to challenge him. I think we can't just focus on Haaland; we need to stop the entire Manchester City team, and that's an important distinction. Haaland receives the ball from his teammates, and we've prepared as best we can for this match. I believe we can deliver an excellent performance because we have a strong team, and our defense is solid. We know how to maintain a good shape across all three lines."
